Now, those students who fail to clear their year-end exams can be held back.
According to an official notification, if students fail to clear the year-end exams, they will be given additional coaching and an opportunity to take a re-exam within two months of the results.

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Union Education Ministry, said that if the students fail to clear their exams again, they will not be promoted. "Along with this, the schools have also been instructed that no student will be expelled from school till class 8th," he added.
Right to Education Act
Notably, at least 16 states and two Union Territories have already discontinued the 'no-detention policy' for the two grades after an amendment to the Right to Education Act (RTE) in 2019.
