Health Ministry asks States to increase COVID-19 vigilance

Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, and Karnataka have been directed again to employ a five-fold strategy to tackle upsurge in COVID-19 cases of test-track-treat-vaccine and adherence to COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour.

Health secretary Bharat Bhushan has written to these states to keep an eye on COVID clusters. Stating that 81% of the cases in the last 24 hours were from these states the Ministry said that there is, therefore, a need to follow a risk assessment based approach on the public health responses without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic.

Coronavirus infections in the country rose by 7,240 in the 24 hours to 8 a.m. on Thursday, 39% jump from the previous day’s figure. The tally is crossing 7,000 after 99 days, while the daily positivity rate crossed 2% after 111 days, the Union Health Ministry.

There were eight fresh fatalities (one each in Delhi and Chhattisgarh and six in Kerala), and the active cases rose by 3,641 to 32,498. The national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.71%, the Ministry said.

The daily positivity rate was 2.13%, and the weekly rate 1.31%, according to the data. The case fatality rate was 1.21%.

Maharashtra recorded 2,813 new cases, the highest in nearly four months, and one death, the State Health Department said in the evening. Mumbai reported a marginal drop with 1,702 infections, 63 fewer than 1,765 recorded the previous day, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Delhi logged 622 fresh cases and two more deaths on Thursday, while the positivity rate rose to 3.17%, according to data shared by the city’s Health Department in the evening.
