Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Central Vista Avenue today. The inauguration event will begin at 7pm and the government has announced a 4 day long cultural function.
PM Modi will also inaugurate the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and cultural function and drone show on the freedom fighter will be held after the event.
Post-Independence, the Central Vista Avenue streets were also renamed: King’s Way became Rajpath and Queen’s Way became Janpath. The Viceroy’s House became the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the All India War Memorial became the India Gate.
What is Central Vista?
Central Vista is the administrative capital of the country. Envisaged by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, the Central Vista holds the functioning of the government. It was inaugurated in 1931.
The Central Vista comprises Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament House, North and South Blocks and the Record Office (later named as The National Archives), along with the India Gate monument and the civic gardens on either side of the Rajpath.
"The plan was designed using traditional urban planning instruments, featuring a strong axis, an emphasised focal point, formation of important nodes, and a definitive termination point. At the time, it was one of the largest projects of its kind in the world, conceived and designed to reflect the spirit, progress and global importance of India," says an official statement.
Today, the refurbished Central Vista Avenue will be inaugurated.
Here are few things, kids should know about this project of national importance:
1. The Central Vista Avenue stretches from Rashtrapati Bhavan to the India Gate.
2. The stretch which was earlier known as Rajpath, will be known as Kartavya Path from today.
3. This stretch is one of the most visited places in Delhi and also witnesses events of cultural and national reputation like Independence Day and Republic Day.
4. The Kartavya Path is lined with lawns, red granite walkway of 16.5 km, public amenities, vending zones and signages.
5. It also has an amphitheater with 16 food stalls.
6. It has a parking space to accommodate up to 1,000 cards and also has four pedestrian underpasses.
7. The Avenue comprises a 3 km long tree-lined stretch from the Viceroy’s House to the All India War Memorial.
8. It would also have a rainwater harvesting system at designated locations.
9. The overall greenery coverage of the Central Vista Avenue has been increased from 3,50,000 square metres to 3,90,000 square metres.
10. Till date, the redevelopment plan has created 7,71,842 employment days.
Recently, PM Modi unveiled a bronze statue of the National Emblem weighing 9,500 kilos.
