Centra supermarket rice recalled over fears of hidden insects inside packets

An Irish convenience store chain is recalling some of its rice because of insects inside some of the packets.

Centra, which runs more than 460 stores across Ireland , is recalling some boil-in-the-bag long grain rice over the issue.

The variety of insect has not been announced.

A note from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said: "Centra is recalling Centra Boil in the Bag Long Grain Rice due to the possible presence of insects in a limited number of packs.

"The possible presence of insects in the product listed above makes it unsafe for consumption."

The affected rice has best before dates running up to November 23, 2023.

Centra is recalling the rice and putting up signs in its stores to let customers know about the issue.

A Centra spokesperson said: "At Centra we take all food safety issues extremely seriously as we pride ourselves on delivering quality products to our customers.

"As a precaution, we have recalled batches of our Centra brand rice due to the possible presence of insects in a limited number of packs.

"We are currently coordinating the removal of all the affected stock and point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the potentially implicated batches.

"Centra always acts in the best interests of our customers and the quality of our products is paramount; we apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The convenience store chain issues relatively few recalls.

The last problem flagged up by the FSA was in November 2018, when the brand sold chocolate raisins that contained peanuts not mentioned on the packaging.

Last month The Mirror reported that Indian snacks sold by stores such as Costcutter, Spar, Simply Fresh and Nisa were being recalled over allergy concerns .

These foods, made by Birmingham-based Classic Cuisine, contain mustard and celery not mentioned on their labels.

Many people are allergic to these foods, which can trigger life-threatening anaphylactic shocks.

Classic Cuisine make foods to sell in convenience stores, which include Select & Save and Best One as well as independent shops.

The recalled foods include shish, shami and chicken kebabs and vegetable, lamb and chicken samosas.

The firm is also recalling its chicken and tandoori pakoras and lamb khatlama.

The FSA said: "Classic Cuisine is recalling nine of their products because they contain mustard and celery which are not mentioned on the label. This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to celery and/or mustard."

It has hard to say exactly which stores are affected because not all of the outlets listed stock all Classic Cuisine products.

Last month The Mirror also reported that four major stores have warned parents not to use a popular children's cup after it was discovered to pose a choking hazard.

Asda, Boots, Morrisons and Tesco are recalling Nuby Incredible Gulp and Super Quench cups due to the issue.

Cups bought between November 1, 2021 and January 14, 2022 with batch codes WF10V and WG08V are being recalled by Nuby.

The same problem affects cups bought direct from the Nuby UK website.

Nuby said the mouth section of the cups' spout could come off if the straw or spout became damaged.
