Center Parcs thanks guests for 'helping' it shut down during Queen's funeral

Center Parcs thanked guests for helping it create a ‘unique opportunity’ for staff following a botched plan to close the venues for the Queen's funeral.

People staying at Sherwood Forest in Newark received a letter from the company's bosses on the eve of the sad state event, one man staying there claimed.

It thanked them for "helping us create the unique opportunity" for staff "to be part of this historic event".

The note came despite the fact many Center Parcs staff were required to work on Bank Holiday Monday, one visitor told The Mirror.

The letter followed outcry over plans to ban people from staying at Center Parcs resorts, which were scrapped last week when people asked where they were supposed to go.

Following the back-track the business told people who were already there that they could stay, but that they'd have to remain in their cabins all day.

This announcement was swiftly reversed, but many people who had been due to check-in on Monday were not allowed to do so - leading some to cancel their holidays.

On Sunday a note was delivered to people at the Sherwood Forest site, informing guests that restaurants would be closed.

Those at the park were encouraged to ‘arrange food delivery from the local area’ if they could.

The letter added that visitors were ‘welcome to walk or cycle around the village or leave the village to explore the local area should you wish to do so’.

It added: "Thank you again for helping us create the unique opportunity for our team to be part of this historic event."

David Tomlinson, from Solihull in the West Midlands, took to Twitter to share the letter.

He wrote: "Thank you for the letter delivered to our lodge this morning.

"I assume the thank you for ‘helping us create the unique opportunity’ is meant to be sarcasm, because if not for the media backlash you’d be still be expecting us to vacate the park for one day.

"I still note that like in the original emails and social media posts you still haven’t said sorry. After the stress you put so many of your customers through, is that really so much to ask?"

One person who had stayed at Center Parcs over the weekend said many staff had still been required to come into work on Monday, raising questions about what the 'unique opportunity' they'd been offered was.

"We have friends that work there and live very close," she told The Mirror.

"The staff were in like normal. They collect staff from the local villages and town by bus and they were all out this morning waiting to go into the park for work."

Last a couple who spent their honeymoon at Center Parcs told the Mirror how they had to cancel their trip after the company refused to check them in because of the Queen's funeral.

Amy has visited the famous holiday park six times before and even spent a romantic post-wedding break in one of its cabins with her new husband Ben.

The Center Parcs enthusiast has been left filled with "so much anger and disappointment" after the company closed check-in for 24 hours from Monday.

With no where to stay on Monday evening, and with a hotel reservation they no longer need on Sunday, Amy and Ben have cancelled their stay at the Woburn Forest park and opted for a caravan break instead.
