Celtics’ Jayson Tatum happy to hit game-winner vs. 76ers, but quick to credit teammates

After hitting a near-buzzer-beater to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum admitted “I’ve dreamed of taking those shots.” And while Joel Embiid very nearly tied it up with a Hail Mary full-court heave that just missed being released in time to count, it did not dampen the St. Louis native’s mood.

“I want to be the guy,” he admitted, “and that’s the great part right now.” Even as he enjoyed the afterglow of the win, Tatum was careful to include his teammates, who carried the Celtics for much of the game while the Duke alum’s shot was cold. “I earned the trust and respect of my teammates,” he explained.

“They noted the night wasn’t going great for me, but they still trusted me to send us on the road with a win.”

“I never think about missing a shot,” he added, suggesting the ‘glass half-full’ point of view was important in such contexts. “You always think about making it.”
