Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, floor general? ‘Just another part of my game that I’ve been growing’

Playmaking has never been a notable part of All-NBA Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown’s game before this season, but the Cal alum has been embracing his role as a secondary floor general with the Celtics to start the NBA’s 2023-24 season. And in the Celtics 119-116 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at TD Garden on Wednesday night, Brown led the team in made assists with 8.

Asked about this new wrinkle postgame, the Georgia native replied via The Athletic’s Jay King that it was “definitely just another part of my game that I’ve been growing. This is a new year, it’s a new season and I feel like I’m playing some of my best basketball.”

“(It’s) just how I’m seeing the floor,” he added, “and as I get into the flow and the rhythm of things I feel like I’ll be able to continue to do that.”

“I think when I get going, more guys playing off me, trusting that I’m going to make the right read, I think we should go to that a lot more,” he suggested.

Between this and his newfound chemistry with Kristaps Porzingis in the pick and roll, a clearer role for Brown in this iteration of the Celtics is coming into focus.

And in the nick of time at that, given we have seen that the bull-in-a-china-shop version of his game resurfaces from seasons past when Brown struggles to find his place on the floor.
