Celtics honor Jaylen Brown with 2023 Red Auerbach Award

The Boston Celtics have awarded Jaylen Brown with the 2023 Red Auerbach Award. Dating back to 2006, the team has bestowed this annual honor to the player who best exemplifies what it means to be a Boston Celtic. Brown, who is in his seventh season with Boston, is having one of his best campaigns as a pro as he gears up for another trip to the NBA Finals. Likewise, he is an important leader in the NBA community and an advocate for social change.

Named for legendary coach Arnold “Red” Auerbach, the award is a link between the club’s past and present. Auerbach joined the Celtics in 1950, and was with the team as coach, general manager, or president for 16 of the team’s 17 championships.

Brown is averaging 26.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, both career highs. He’s emerged as one of the NBA’s most potent scorers and is an integral part of what the Celtics do on both sides of the ball. Brown earned his second All-Star appearance this February.

Away from the action, Brown is a vocal advocate for social justice, continuing an old and storied Celtics tradition. He also serves as a vice president to the National Basketball Player’s Association, among other important pursuits. As one of the flagship franchises in the NBA, being a leader on and off the court is a key component of being a Boston Celtic.

Robert Williams III won the honor last year, and Brown now joins the ranks of past winners such as Marcus Samrt, Paul Pierce, Isaiah Thomas, and many others. The team gifted Brown the award in a brief pregame ceremony Wednesday night.

Congrats to Brown for winning the award. The Georgia native may be adding to his trophy case soon enough, however. Brown is squarely in the mix for All-NBA honors this season, while the Celtics will compete for a coveted 18th banner this spring.
