Celtics’ Grant Williams on discovering his important role in the NBA: ‘I had to find my niche’

Boston’s Grant Williams had one of the most impressive performances of the NBA postseason, tying the record for the most 3-pointers made in Game 7 history.

Williams became a much more well-known player during the breakout moment, finishing with a career-high 27 points to secure a closeout win over the Bucks to clinch a spot in the NBA Finals against the Warriors.

Now that the Celtics enter the upcoming season as the favorites to win the title, the 6-foot-6 forward has quickly established himself as one of the most important role players in the league.

Williams, who now has three years of professional experience, recently presented at the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program.

We have previously written about the NBA’s RTP, which you can learn more about here and here. Shortly after he was drafted in 2019, Cody Taylor spoke with Williams about his experience as a participant for a story on USA TODAY’s Rookie Wire.

Williams has become a popular player for NBA prospects to compare themselves to before becoming pros. Grizzlies first-round draft pick David Roddy compared himself to Williams when he spoke to For The Win, and Pelicans second-rounder EJ Liddell told The Athletic the same thing.

During a recent Zoom interview with For The Win, Williams explained what he said to the rookie class while presenting at NBA 2K23 Summer League in Las Vegas. He also reflected on the playoffs, his back-and-forth with Stephen Curry, and plenty more.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.
