Celtic would be ideal for Gilmour, but he wouldn't go because of Rangers allegiance, claims pundit

CELTIC would be an ideal loan destination for Billy Gilmour - but he'd never sign for the club due to his Rangers allegiance, a pundit has claimed.

Ex-Chelsea and Scotland star Pat Nevin reckons both Rangers and Celtic offer a solid opportunity for youngster Gilmour to add to his first-team experience.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with Norwich who were relegated from the English Premier League. And ahead of this term, Nevin has cited both Rangers and Celtic as decent options for Gilmour to continue his development.

However, Nevin has claimed Gilmour would never join Celtic because of his Rangers-daft mum. But the starlet's dad is a Celtic fan and Gilmour did spend three months at a young age with the club before moving to Rangers due to logistics of making training.

Gilmour then progressed through the youth ranks at Rangers before a move to Chelsea which came before he made a first-team appearance at Ibrox.

However, according to Nevin a Rangers loan move could do the young midfielder - who is a regular for the national team - the world of good.

Nevin - speaking to BoyleSports on behalf of the Scottish Sun - said: "I know Billy a bit and his family and yeah Rangers would suit his style and so would Celtic.

"Knowing his family though, the Celtic one is unlikely.

"He's different class Billy, he's a super player.

"But he needs to be playing for a team who plays good football which is suited to him.

"I think Celtic and Rangers style would work for him, but because of his family, it wouldn't be Celtic for him."
