Celtic women can make Scottish Champions League history this week

The Celtic FC Women's side defeated Ukrainian champions Vorskla Poltava 1-0 at the weekend, courtesy of a fifth-minute Murphy Agnew strike in the first leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League Round Two tie.

Should Elena Sadiku's side avoid defeat on Thursday's return leg, Celtic will become the first Scottish team to reach the competition's lucrative group stages, following the formal introduction of a group stage to the tournament at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

Glasgow City have previously fared well in the tournament, having reached the last-16 of the UEFA Women's Cup in 2008 – equivocal to today's group-stage – and the competition's quarter-finals in 2015.

Should Celtic reach the group stage, however, they'll become the first club to do so.

As reported earlier this month, both legs of the Round Two tie will be held at Airdrieonians' Excelsior Stadium – the Celtic women's side home ground – as a result of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Manager Elena Sadiku spoke to the official Celtic website after their 1-0 first-leg victory. She said:  "I would say that it was a solid performance. When it comes to the first 20 minutes of the game, I think we acted exactly like the game plan was.

"I think from then we kind of let them in a bit too much in the game by our own mistakes. Obviously, we created a lot of chances, and we maybe could have scored four at least. But I’m very confident when it comes to how we hurt today.

“We defended really well. They had a clear chance that they probably should have scored on. But overall, I think if you look at the game it could have ended 5-1. So, hopefully we can get out of this very confident, which I am.

"Now it’s just about recovery and focusing on the second half of this tie."
