Celtic winger Mikey Johnston secures clearance to play for Ireland

Mikey Johnston is ready to win over Stephen Kenny after getting the green light to face Latvia and France.

The FAI today secured international clearance for the Celtic winger who is on loan at Portuguese top flight side Vitória Guimarães.

And Ireland boss Kenny is expected to name the Glasgow-born 23-year-old in his squad when it is revealed on March 16.

Johnston said: "I'm delighted to declare for the Republic of Ireland and excited for what my future holds in an Ireland shirt.

"Myself and my family have always been proud of our Irish roots with my grandad hailing from Derry.

“To potentially play for Ireland is something that really excites me.

"It's up to me now to impress the manager and to get selected to the squad but my focus is to break into that squad and to make an impact for the team in a big year.

Johnston - who won three Under-21 caps for Scotland - added: "I've always watched the Ireland matches and the atmosphere always looks incredible.

“I can't wait to play at the Aviva Stadium and hopefully create some great moments for the team."

Last week, Kenny claimed Johnston could have a big role to play in this year’s Euro 2024 qualifiers which begin against France on March 27.

Kenny said: “I expect him to be important and very much be involved in the campaign ahead.”

“He played in four Scottish Cup finals before he was 22 - two Scottish Cups and two League Cup finals.

“He has played a lot of big games and some good European games for Celtic. He's a right-footed left-winger that can play on the right as well.

“And he's a dribbler, someone who has a lot of talent, but unfortunately he missed out for a full year injured. He had a calf operation and lost a full year of his career, which was difficult for him.”

Kenny continued: “Celtic signed a lot of players and they've obviously been very successful, so he's had a period at Vitoria where he has played the majority of games.

“It's a good league, the Portuguese league, a high standard.

“We can't expect too much, too soon from him, it's going to be one over a period of time where he gets a full season under his belt.

“And over the next year or two I'm sure he'll really excel because he has lots of natural talent.”

Johnston has scored three goals and provided three assists in 20 appearances for Primeira Liga side Vitória Guimarães this season.
