Former Scotland U21 international Mikey Johnston has reportedly opted to switch his international allegiance and play for Ireland over the country of his birth.
The Celtic winger, who is currently on loan at Portuguese side Vitoria Guimarães, is eligible to turn out for either national squad with his grandparents hailing from Derry.
According to the Irish Independent, Johnston has decided to play for Stephen Kenny's side after conversations with the manager over the winter. The report claims he has already gone through the proper process to change his decision from blue to green.
Johnston is enjoying his loan stint with Vitoria Guimarães and was to be watched by Kenny in league action in Portugal, however he was an unused substitute against Braga.
Johnston has scored once and provided two assists in Portugal since arriving on loan from the Hoops and has featured 14 times in total after making the move.
His Celtic exit came earlier this season when it became apparent he would not play regularly under Ange Postecoglou, reports Football Scotland.
“There’s definitely a talented footballer there but sometimes you just need a different environment to help that happen,” the Celtic manager said last July.
Johnston's Celts career has been plagued by injuries but he does have 11 goals in 80 appearances in all competitions.
With the Tartan Army he has not been capped at senior level though he has played for the under-19s and 21s.
