Celtic vs Rangers predictions ahead of the Scottish League Cup final

Celtic and Rangers stare down their second showdown of the season in the Scottish League Cup final this Sunday, December 15, at the national stadium.

Brendan Rodgers' men are so far unbeaten in domestic competition, having swept their city rivals aside 3-0 at Celtic Park in September.

Philippe Clement's side, on the other hand, endured a turbulent start to their league campaign, however have since stabilised their form in the Scottish Premiership while excelling on the European stage.

Ahead of Sunday's showpiece encounter, Rangers come off the back of a thrilling 1-1 Europa League draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Ibrox, while Celtic enter following a well-contested 0-0 stalemate against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League

Come Sunday evening, one side will have been crowned champions, but until then here are our Celtic vs Rangers predictions...

Celtic v Rangers predictions for the Scottish League Cup Final 2024

Matthew Lindsay

Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers

Rangers are, as was obvious during their impressive 1-1 draw with Spurs at Ibrox on Thursday night, in fine form heading into the Premier Sports Cup final at Hampden tomorrow.

And I fully expect them to give Celtic a far closer game than they did in the William Hill Premiership match at Parkhead back at the start of September.

Their defence is less porous, their midfield far more commanding and up front they are carving out, and converting, numerous chances.

But I still feel that Celtic - who have been on fire, their 7-1 mauling by Borussia Dortmund in Germany in October aside, since pre-season - will just have too much for them.

The Scottish champions should have that little bit of extra quality they need in every area of the pitch to get their hands on the silverware.

Graeme McGarry

Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers

If you had asked me a month ago, the winning margin would have been much wider, but Philippe Clement deserves credit for the recent improvement in Rangers’ performances.

They look much more of a threat going forward over the past few weeks, and if Hamza Igamane has his shooting boots on again, the Ibrox side will fancy their chances.

Celtic though have only lost one match all season, so they are hardly short of confidence or momentum themselves. The greater quality they possess along with the longer rest they have had since their European exertions should just tip the balance in their favour.

Joe Donnelly

Celtic 3 - 0 Rangers

Rangers, to their credit, were dynamite against Spurs in midweek and likely deserved more than a share of the points on Ange Postecoglou's return to Glasgow.

Celtic, admittedly, haven't quite sustained their signature electric intensity of late, best showcased against the likes of RB Leipzig, Aberdeen in this competition's semi-final, and, indeed, Rangers in the Scottish Premiership earlier this year.

But Brendan Rodgers has a remarkable record at Hampden, against his city rivals, and in cup finals, and as such I think Celtic will once again prove too much for Philippe Clement and his in-form side. An early goal followed by two in the second half will get the job done for the green half of Glasgow.

Jonny McFarlane

Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers (AET)

Rangers have hit form at the right time and suddenly look a completely different proposition from the disjointed, misshapen mess of a month ago.

Hamza Igamane, Danilo and Ianis Hagi have transformed the team and will ask more questions of Celtic than the hapless Cyriel Dessers.

That said, Brendan Rodgers’ men are in fine form themselves, looking likely to qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League and dominating the Premiership.

It will be a tight game, but Rangers’ titanic clash with Spurs might end up having taken too much out of the tank, especially if we end up with extra time.

Robbie Hanratty

Celtic 3 - 2 Rangers

It's going to be a thrilling contest and I'm expecting both teams to really go for it from the off at the national stadium. Celtic are still unbeaten domestically this season and seem to have the know-how to produce important results, and most importantly win silverware consistently under Brendan Rodgers.

If you asked me after watching Rangers lose to Aberdeen at the end of October then I would've predicted a more comfortable Celtic victory. However, the Light Blues appear to be finding form and have recorded some impressive results during a nine-game unbeaten run since.

Hamza Igamane and Vaclav Cerny will be key to Rangers' attacking efforts, while they will be hoping Nicolas Raskin can emulate his stellar performance from Thursday night.

Although, ultimately, I feel Celtic boast the experience and more big-game performers who will help them gain the much-coveted Scottish football bragging rights come Sunday evening.
