Celtic transfer update as Ronny Deila announces interest in Hoops player but deal not certain

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston has had interest from Belgian First Division club Standard Liege confirmed by former Hoops boss Ronny Deila.

The Norwegian was reported as a potential suitor for the 23-year-old who has been told that he is free to seek a loan in search of regular minutes. It has been a frustrating two seasons for Johnston who has had injury plague any chances of solidifying himself as a regular at Parkhead.

There are options for him in the UK but the ex-green and white boss says he is one Standard Liege are looking at as they look for a strong first season under his guidance. Deila told the Daily Record of potential recruits Johnston and former Salernitana defender Stefan Stranberg: “I know both of them, but we do not know how it’s going to go. A lot of players interest us and if we could recruit all those we wanted, it would be easy.

“We continue to scrutinise the market and we don’t want it to go wrong at the moment when we are trying to sign a player for the club.”

Manager Ange Postecoglou said of Johnston prior to Celtic's Premiership opener at home to Aberdeen: "We're working with Mikey on that.

"There's definitely a talented footballer there, but sometimes you just need a different environment to help that happen."
