Celtic transfer target Barry signs new Aston Villa contract before loan switch

Celtic transfer target Louie Barry has signed a new contract with Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old was reportedly a January target for Brendan Rodgers' side with discussions held with the Premier League club.

However, Aston Villa - who play Celtic tonight in the Champions League - were reluctant to discuss a permanent transfer and offered Barry a new deal.

It has now been confirmed that the forward has penned new terms at Villa Park and won't be leaving the club for good any time soon.

Barry has, though, left on loan for the remainder of the season as he joined Hull City immediately after signing his new deal.

An Aston Villa statement read: "Aston Villa is delighted to announce that Louie Barry has signed a new contract and will immediately join Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season.

"The 21-year-old scored 14 goals for Stockport in the early part of the campaign.

"He twice twice won the League One Player of the Month award during his time at Edgeley Park."

On joining Hull, Barry told the club website: “I’m really excited. I had a good start to the season and, hopefully, I can end it really well. I’ve got a lot of goals in my mind that I want to achieve here.

“I spoke to the gaffer and he said all the right things. I watched the Sheffield United game and that was a big turning point for me because everything the gaffer said was spot on and came to fruition.

“I just want to get out there now. I haven’t played for about a month and I’m chomping at the bit to get out and hopefully score a few goals.

“I started the season off by scoring goals and creating chances, and I want to end it the same way. I’m hungry, probably hungrier than ever, and I’ve got that point to prove in the Championship.

“I’ve never played in the Championship, so it’s my time to go out there and show people what I can do.”
