Celtic 'transfer target' Alistair Johnston opens up on potential Montreal departure

Celtic target Alistair Johnston has admitted he would be open to leaving CF Montreal as he bids to reach the highest level he can.

The full-back is currently at the World Cup with Canada and featured in the opening group game defeat to Belgium. The Hoops could lose star defender Josip Juranovic, also in Qatar with Croatia, after the finals and they have Johnston on their transfer radar as Ange Postecoglou bids to move quickly in the winter window once again.

The Celtic gaffer has already completed a fresh raid on the J-League by snapping up highly-regarded left-sided defender Yuki Kobayashi from Vissel Kobe on a five-year deal. MLS outfit Montreal paid Nashville £800,000 for the full-back last December and they would command a considerably larger fee to part ways with the defender. His former club are also believed to be entitled to a slice of any transfer fee agreed to the tune of 10 per cent.

But Johnston would consider a move abroad and would love to test himself out in Europe admitting he 'wants to push boundaries' in his career.

He said: “There is only so much I can say right now but if an opportunity arises, sure.

“I am really happy at Montreal and we have a great thing going, but at the same time I want to test myself, and I want to see how high I can go.

“That’s something that for all athletes deep down is in our DNA.

“You want to be competitive and push yourself to play against the best and see how high you can go.

“We never want to look back at our career and have the, ‘What if?’ question. I’ve nightmares thinking about that.

“I want to push the boundaries of what is physically capable for me.

“If that means going overseas, and trying to see what kind of level I can play at, then so be it. We will see how the World Cup goes and we will see what happens after that.”
