More than one million Celtic fans piled into Parkhead to watch their team during a potential Treble season.
Ange Postcoglou made it two titles from two attempts, also lifting the League Cup once again. And three will be the magic number if they beat Inverness CT as expected in this Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final and complete just an eighth Treble in the Hoops’ history. It’s not just the trophy count that’s putting bums on seats though, as the champions’ swashbuckling style and refusal to alter their approach is striking a chord with fans.
It may not have produced results in the Champions League, but the Celtic faithful are loving their side having a go at the European heavyweights. It was Real Madrid last year, and there will be another chance to do battle with the big boys in next season’s group stage. Unsurprisingly with the biggest stadium, it was the Bhoys who topped the total attendance table for the campaign, with 1, 116, 728 spectators through the turnstiles.
Rangers were next with 933, 207. In contrast to the other side of the city, it was a trophyless season for the Light Blues. The campaign saw a change of manager halfway through and Michael Beale now must get to grips with Celtic and claw back some honours or risk Rangers’ rivals taking their “world’s most successful club” tag next season.
Hearts may have missed out on third in the Scottish Premiership despite a commanding lead at one point, but they are best of the rest when it comes to crowds. Season tickets sold out last summer and Europa Conference League group stage games against Istanbul Basaksehir, Fiorentina and RFS saw 351, 978 Jambos journey to Tynecastle to see the boys in maroon.
Aberdeen weren't far behind, and will be hoping they get those extra European nights to help boost next season’s figures. Celtic must do the business at Hampden to confirm the Dons’ spot in the Europa League playoff round, which comes with a Conference League group stage safety net.
Taking into account the totals across the board, it was a record campaign for fans at games. A highest number since the 1950s were inside stadiums across the country.
