Celtic’s 2-1 Scottish Premiership defeat to Hibernian at Easter Road took a controversial turn last weekend following the disallowing of Daizen Maeda’s potential equaliser in the 83rd minute.
The Japanese forward thought he had secured a dramatic leveller for the Hoops, but his goal was ruled out by VAR after it was judged that the ball had gone out of play prior to Alistair Johnston’s cross.
However, after a review by the Scottish Football Association’s (SFA) key match incident panel, the decision has been deemed incorrect.
The panel concluded that Maeda’s strike should have been allowed to stand, throwing further scrutiny on the VAR decision-making process during the match.
(Image: Craig Foy - SNS Group) A note from the SFA read: "The majority (4:1) of the panel deemed the on-field decision of goal to be correct. They felt the factual VAR intervention for the ball being out of play was incorrect. One panel member felt VAR was correct to intervene as they believed one of the angles showed the ball out of play."
The disallowed goal could have changed the outcome for Celtic, who ultimately suffered a narrow loss in Edinburgh.
Celtic still remain 13 points clear at the league summit and look on course to win yet another title.
