Celtic supporters to mark 20th anniversary of UEFA Cup Final with charity cycle to Seville

A band of bighearted Celtic fans are set to cycle from Glasgow to Seville to raise funds for charity and mark the 20th anniversary of the club reaching the UEFA Cup final.

Around 30 Hoops diehards will pedal more than 1,000 miles on the Road to Seville challenge from Scotland before arriving in the Spanish city next month.

The trip is expected to take two weeks to complete and will see them finish at the Estadio Olimpico de Sevilla on May 21, the day of the 2003 final.

They will cycle in special replicate kit of the away strip worn by Celtic players during the 2002/03 season featuring the Celtic FC Foundation logo.

A fundraising target of £100,000 has been set by organisers with all money going to the Foundation. Around £27,000 has already been pledged by supporters.

The journey has been split into three legs with the first stage taking the cyclists from Celtic Park to Cairnryan. They will then pedal from Belfast to Rosslare before sailing to the Spanish city of Bilbao. The fans will then take on the final part of their challenge which will see them finish in Seville.

The same group travelled from Glasgow to Lisbon to mark the 50th anniversary of Celtic lifting the European Cup in 2017. A total of £80,000 was raised through their efforts on that occasion.

Clare Sweeney, one of those helping to organise the event, said: "We are excited to be on the road again raising much needed funds for Celtic FC Foundation.

"The Road to Lisbon was an epic adventure and when the idea of marking the Road to Seville surfaced it was an easy decision to make. My dad, who again is taking part, first bought me a bike which started the ball rolling with Lisbon and will continue in Seville.

"In between these trips, we have had a few meet ups, and are now a big Celtic cycling family open to anyone who'd like to join us. It will be another memorable adventure and I would recommend it to anyone."

The match in Seville was the last time the Parkhead side reached a major European final where they were defeated 3-2 by Porto. An estimated 80,000 Celtic fans made the journey to Spain for the game.

The supporters will wear replicas of the away strip worn by the team that season plus the Celtic FC Foundation logo.

A fundraising target of £100,000 has been set, with all money going to the foundation. About £27,000 has already been pledged. The journey is in three legs, with the first stage from Celtic Park to Cairnryan. Fans will then pedal from Belfast to Rosslare before sailing to Bilbao in Spain and heading to Seville.
