Celtic star's fitness query as pundit ponders 'question mark' over summer signing

Hamilton hero James McCarthy's fitness has been questioned after a difficult season at Celtic.

The midfielder joined the Hoops last summer after leaving English Premier League club Crystal Palace. It's his first foray back in the Scottish game since leaving Hamilton.

He has featured just eight times in the Premiership and made a cameo appearance during Celtic's 3-0 Scottish Cup quarter-final win against Dundee United.

McCarthy is a legend at Hamilton and memories of his time at Accies are dotted around the Fountain of Youth Stadium.

Now 31, the midfielder emerged in South Lanarkshire as a teenager and made one appearance short of 100 before moving south to Wigan in 2009.

Former Rangers and Scotland star Alan Hutton believes McCarthy's fitness has proven a big 'question mark' during the Hamilton academy graduate's time in Glasgow.

He told Football Insider : "He’s another player that has struggled to stay fit. I think if you look at the options right now and how Ange Postecoglou plays the game, it’s very high intensity and high energy. Is he able to do that?

“You look at the ground Hatate covers, even McGregor. They’re workhorses. They get up and down the pitch, they make things happen and that question mark is over James McCarthy.

“Is he capable of doing that for 90 minutes? At the moment, I’m not so sure.

“I think it’s up to him to go and prove that he can play in this team. That he can get to the levels needed to play that high energy football.”
