Celtic star Matt O'Riley 'wanted' for Southampton transfer

Celtic star Matt O'Riley is attracting transfer interest from Southampton, according to a report.

O'Riley's former manager, Russell Martin, is keen to reunite with his old MK Dons player.

The one-time Rangers defender is preparing to lead Saints into the Premier League after their comfortable Championship play-off final victory over Leeds United.

And the Scottish Sun states that with all the riches the Premier League brings, Martin is keen to sign Celtic Player of the Year O'Riley.

It's expected the Denmark international - who won't be playing at Euro 2024 this summer - will fetch a fee worth over £25m if he was to move on this summer. This would break the Scottish transfer record.

The report does state that while Saints are keen, the Premier League new boys could be put off by the hefty price tag for a player based in Scotland.

Of course, Southampton has a healthy history of signing players from Celtic though, with Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and Stuart Armstrong all proving to be success stories.

Martin is hopeful that his previous relationship with O'Riley could play a factor in the player's decision should he opt to leave Celtic, with a cluster of clubs both in the UK and abroad monitoring his situation.

Brendan Rodgers immediately knocked back Atletico Madrid's loan-to-buy offer for O'Riley during the January transfer window.

Brighton, Newcastle, West Ham and Everton have all been credited with an interest.

O'Riley played for Martin's MK Dons in League One before he joined Celtic. It was Martin who signed him just a year before he left for Glasgow, and the worked together before the boss decided to leave for Swansea City.

Ange Postecoglou sanctioned the move for the attacking midfielder in January 2022.
