Coatbridge's Stephen Welsh says he has to be playing games regularly - but a lack of minutes doesn't dishearten him from succeeding at Celtic.
The Scotland u21s international hasn't played a Premiership match for Ange Postecoglou's side in 2022, but the Australian has praised him in a couple of interviews in recent weeks.
Welsh has featured 22 times this season for the Hoops, which is half of his overall tally of 44 for Celtic.
Six points clear in the title race and heading into a Scottish Cup semi-final with Rangers at Hampden this weekend, the 22-year-old knows getting on the pitch is key.
Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt have struck up a strong partnership in Postecoglou's central defence, and the Lanarkshire ace says he's happy to bide his time.
He told the Scottish Sun : "It’s always frustrating when you don’t play. But the performances Cameron and Carl have been putting in have been of the highest level.
“I think I’ve done well again this season. Obviously, there was a new manager to impress and I thought I started the season really well.
“I’ve had a good few runs in the team, and I’ve played more games than I did last season. Of course, I want back in the side. I’ll always have that desire to play.
“But the main thing is Celtic are winning, that’s what really matters. It’s important to me that I progress every season. I’m 22 now. I need to be playing games.
“The fact I’ve had more first team appearances is a big positive. The competition is fierce, especially in my position. But it’s only a good thing, we’ve got four players pushing for those positions in defence now.
“Cameron and Carl know me and big Chris (Jullien) are fighting hard to get back in, and that keeps them on their toes. That’s what the gaffer wants.
“At the same time, though, we all do everything we can to support the boys in the team.
“The squad spirit is amazing. The manager and everyone behind the scenes have pulled together brilliantly.
“We’re in a position to go and achieve major success for the club, which is the least the fans deserve after last year.”
