Celtic star Jota on his return to form and guiding the next generation at Lennoxtown

Celtic winger Jota has stressed the importance of experience and togetherness within the squad as the Hoops prepare to face St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership this weekend.

The Portuguese star, who returned to Parkhead in January following an 18-month spell away, has been steadily regaining his sharpness and has already made a notable impact.

With 12 appearances under his belt since his return, Jota has contributed four goals and two assists, reminding fans why he was such a key figure in his first stint with the club.

Reflecting on his own form, the 26-year-old admitted he is still working towards peak condition but is pleased with his progress so far.

“I think it’s been a good couple of games. Still trying to be in my best shape, and I know that will come definitely. I am happy at the moment with how things are going,” Jota said.

“We never know how far we can reach, so I’m not going to say that I’m aiming for this and then I can actually aim for something else. I just work hard day by day and just try and be the best I can.”

Jota’s return followed challenging stints at Al Ittihad and Rennes, where he struggled for consistent game time. However, since coming back to Glasgow, he has gradually rediscovered the form that made him a fan favourite during his initial spell at the club.

The playmaker also highlighted the crucial role of Celtic’s senior players in guiding the younger generation, particularly in high-pressure title races and cup competitions.

“I think having lads who have been in this position for several years is really good. And then just passing the culture to the young lads who are coming through,” he explained. “So, in the end, it’s just a matter of putting everyone together and fighting for the same goal.”

With Celtic on course to retain the Premiership crown, Jota’s contributions could prove vital as they enter the business end of the campaign. Brendan Rodgers’ men will be aiming to continue their strong run of form when they travel to McDiarmid Park on Sunday.

It will act as a valuable rehearsal since they have a Scottish Cup semi-final against the same opponent on the horizon in a fortnights time too.
