Celtic star Greg Taylor says playing for Scotland a 'massive honour' and he's ready if called upon

Greg Taylor says any opportunity to play for Scotland is a 'massive honour' with the full-back ready to replace injured skipper Andy Robertson against Ukraine if called upon.

Steve Clarke's men kick off their Nations League triple header with a clash at Hampden in the first of two meetings in the space of six days. Republic of Ireland are sandwiched in between with the group section coming to a conclusion next midweek.

The Dark Blues currently trail tomorrow's opponents by one point and with Armenia next up for them, it is vital that Scotland get all three points at the national stadium. Defeat and it would be four points separating the two sides ahead of the final two games, but victory and Clarke and Co would have the destiny of the group in their own hands.

Scotland have so far won two and lost one of their three League B Group 1 games as they bid to end the Nations League campaign in top spot. Influential skipper Robertson misses out after picking up an injury for Liverpool with Rangers No1 Jon McLaughlin, Grant Hanley and Jacob Brown all ruled out of the original squad picked with Robby McCrorie stepping in.

Taylor has excelled under Ange Postecoglou at Celtic. He's been the first choice left-back and even picked up further experience with Champions League football.

Now - with Kieran Tierney set for a centre-back role - he wants a chance to shine for his country in the left wing-back role.

He said: “It is another system to the one that I am used to playing for my club.

“It is quite different to how I play for Celtic and it is another position for me to learn.

“But that certainly doesn’t mean it is something I would be averse to playing.

“Any opportunity that you get to play for your country is a massive honour no matter what position it is.

“If the chance arises for me to feature there in any of these games then I will be privileged to do so. I always am when I am asked to play for Scotland.”

Clarke talked up his former Kilmarnock defender last week when he announced his squad for the three games during the international break, and Taylor has thanked his boss and says all his focus is now on Scotland and these next batch of fixtures.

He added: “They were really kind words, especially from the national team manager.

“I have always said that if you are performing for your club then international football and recognition takes care of itself.

“All my focus has been on Celtic, but now I will turn my full attention to Scotland and these games against Ukraine and the Republic of Ireland.”
