Celtic star Giakoumakis in 'where's my trophy' poser over top scorer award as he aims for double

Giorgos Giakoumakis admits he is still waiting on his top scorer trophy as he opened up on the 'amazing' and 'really emotional' award his grandfather presented him in his homeland.

The Celtic striker finished joint top of the charts with then Ross County star Regan Charles-Cook as the duo shared the top prize in the Premiership. He scooped the award while at VVV-Venlo in the Eredivisie before his switch to Scotland and after a slow start he netted 17 goals in all competitions as he settled into life at Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou shelled out close to £2.5million to bring the attacker to Glasgow last summer and he is set for a major role this term as the Hoops look to retain the league crown they recaptured from rivals Rangers last season as well as make a splash in the Champions League as they dine at Europe's top table this upcoming campaign with direct entry to the lucrative group stages in the bag.

Speaking about the award from his home village and the background to the story, the Celtic hitman said: “It was really emotional. My grandfather is very old, he is 94 years old.

“He is always proud. They always want you to have success in your life. Your grandfather, your father, your family, they already feel proud no matter what you do in your life.

“So even more when you are a successful football player and he always loved football. So it was a special day for me that I will always remember.

“They just gave me an honour because it is my village. It is where I come from and they had a big festival, a big party. We also had some musicians.

“It was something amazing. They just gave me this trophy in order to give me an honour.”

On the missing top scorer award - that team-mate Kyogo Furuhashi has eyes on next season, he continued: “First of all, I’m still waiting for my trophy.

“Where’s my trophy? Maybe they lost it, I don’t know! We will see. It suits the strikers who have better chances to score.

“That’s one of my main targets this year – to score as many as possible. Why not be the top scorer in the league? Alone.”
