Celtic star 'cheerleader' role earns pundit verdict as he issues 'keeps standards high' reminder

Celtic star Scott Bain has been asked if he is happy to adopt a 'cheerleader' role at Celtic Park by a former Rangers defender.

The Scottish stopper is the de facto number three option at Parkhead in between the sticks, with experienced Joe Hart being the first name on the Hoops' team-sheet every week. The 35-year-old has made 42 appearances for Ange Postecoglou's men this season and has kept 17 clean sheets as Celtic edge towards the title.

Postecoglou recruited former Dundee United keeper Benjamin Siegrist to bolster cover, but the Swiss has managed just two starts in the Viaplay Cup this season and has featured in 2023. Meanwhile Bain's last appearance for Celtic came in December 2021 in a 0-0 draw with St Mirren as he has made just two appearances since Postecoglou's arrival almost two years ago.

Former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton has raised the question of whether the 31-year-old is content with his role as back-up but does concede as long as he 'keeps standards high' then he will have a place at Lennoxtown.

He told told Football Insider: “It really comes down to what he wants. Does he want to continue playing or is he happy at a big club where they are going to win trophies and he is happy just being part of that?

“I have come across goalkeepers that actually quite like that role, of being a supporter, being a good guy around the club, keeping standards high. He might like that.

“He might feel that he wants to be part of the winning team and go down in history as winning a treble or whatever it may be.

"It is really going to fall on his lap, does he want to play football week in week out or is he happy to sit there and be a cheerleader at times.“
