Cameron Carter-Vickers admits his family will be split when the USA take on England this Friday night.
The Celtic defender was an unused sub for America's World Cup Group B opener against Wales. He watched on as former Hoops loanee Timo Weah fired Gregg Berhalter’s team in front, only for gareth Bale to rescue a point for a much improved Welsh side after the break with a late spot kick.
Next up for Carter-Vickers and co is England. Gareth Southgate’s men top the group with three points after their 6-2 demolition of Iran. With Wales playing Carlos Queiroz’s team earlier in the day, The US could do with taking something from the game to keep their chances of qualifying in their own hands. Carter-Vickers in English born, but qualifies for the States through his father, who is an American citizen. He’s represented his dad'’s nation since Under-18 level through to the senior squad.
And while he admits he’ll have mixed emotions coming up against England and that his family loyalties will be split down the middle, the 24-year-old will be going all out to get a first win of the tournament for the USMNT.
“For me, it’s a game that I really want to win, just like any other game in a World Cup,” he said. “To be honest, I'm not too sure how I’m going to feel when the game comes around. But I do know I’ll be doing everything I can to help the team win.
“When the group was drawn and I saw we were in the same group as England, I was excited. They are one of the top teams in the world and to be able to play against them and match up against them is a good thing.
“My family, half of them want us to win. Half want England to win, so…”
