Celtic player ratings vs Shakhtar as Jota shines but McGregor has a bad one at equaliser

Celtic will be left wondering how they didn't claim three points as they got off the mark in the Champions League.

Ange Postecoglou's side bossed the opening exchanges of the game and fired themselves ahead in the early stages but were unable to make the pressure count and grab a second as they were hit on a counter-attacking sucker punch. Highly-rated Mykhailo Mudryk smashed high into the net beyond Joe Hart to level for Shakhtar.

The Hoops simply could not afford to lose this one in their hopes of reaching the last 16 after ex-Hoops flop Marian Shved and his new side won on matchday one at RB Leipzig. A victory was the target but they will have to settle for a share of the spoils - despite being in total control in the second 45 - ahead of a key double-header with the Bundesliga side after the international break. Here's how we rated the Hoops in Warsaw.

Joe Hart - 6

No chance with the goal. Quiet night otherwise.

Josip Juranovic - 6

Played a part in the Celtic goal with a long ball/interception to Haksabanovic. Like Taylor, full of running up and down the park. Was caught out for Shakhtar goal.

Moritz Jenz - 6

Summer signing continues his run in the team with Carl Starfelt injured. Wrong side of Shakhtar attack early in second period and booked for cynical foul. Did well.

Cameron Carter-Vickers - 6

Solid enough performance on the back of a USA call-up. Key figure for Postecoglou ever since he walked in the door.

Greg Taylor - 6

Excellent ball across face of goal but nobody on hard to turn home. Full of running throughout.

Callum McGregor - 5

Always busy and making himself available for the pass. Keeps his side ticking. Another hard-working display from the skipper. But he will be gutted more than anyone when gambling to allow the equaliser.

Matt O'Riley - 6

Looked to pull the strings. Doesn't look out of place on the big stage. Put in the miles. Went close just after the hour with a shot from range.

Reo Hatate - 7

Calm and composed on the ball. A real strong feature of his game. Always looking to orchestrate. Lovely low finish for the opener. Replaced for final 23 minutes.

Jota - 7

Always a threat when on the ball. Took a couple of heavy challenges. Tested keeper 30 seconds into second-half. Two mazy runs but efforts blocked on both occasions. Showed his class.

Sead Haksabanovic - 6

In for his first full start. Direct runner and attracted fouls. Solid shift. Assist for the opening goal. Hooked at half-time.

Kyogo Furuhashi - 7

Denied an opening goal with just 60 seconds on the clock. So, so close to punishing the Shakhtar goalie from back pass. A constant threat. Subbed.

Daizen Maeda - 6

Like Real Madrid, brought on at the break in this one. Didn't make the impact hoped. Big chance with minutes remaining as he beat offside trap but couldn't direct effort on target.

Giorgos Giakoumakis - 4

On for Kyogo. Ran himself into the ground in the final 20 minutes. Missed huge chance with five minutes to play. Inches away from finding top corner.

David Turnbull - 4

Not shy from range. Tried his luck moments after coming on but blazed over.

Aaron Mooy - 4

Part of triple second-half change. Looking to impress every time he gets on the park. Showed some tidy passes and movement.x

Liel Abada - 2

On for final three minutes. Not enough time to make an impact.
