Celtic player ratings v Real Madrid as two Hoops stars shine amid Los Blancos European masterclass

Celtic had plenty of positives to take from their Champions League opener against holders Real Madrid but eventually succumbed to their class in a 3-0 loss.

Ange Postecoglou's men have been in scintillating form domestically and that continued in large parts during the first half, dominating the La Liga giants. Liel Abada should have done better with a chance inside the box before captain Callum McGregor rattled the post from outside the box. Soon they were to be punished for it as the European champions turned on the style.

A fast break released Vinicius Junior in behind and he dispatched in clinical style, with the evergreen Luka Modric marking an early 37th birthday present with a fine goal despite last-ditch Celtic efforts to stop him from scoring. It was a brutal lesson after such a positive first half but now Postecoglou's men look to perhaps more favourable fixtures - albeit still extremely challenging - against RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk before taking on Carlo Ancelotti's side again. Eden Hazard finished off scoring on the night and here's how we rated the Celtic players.

Joe Hart - 7

Made a big stop in the first half and had to be quick with his distribution. Unfortunate to not get more on Modric's effort.

Josip Juranovic - 7

A tough ask against the opening scorer for Real but put the shackles on him, albeit the one chance that was given to him, he scored.

Cameron Carter-Vickers - 7

A clumsy challenge near the halfway line set the wheels in motion for an away goal but such mistakes probably don't go punished domestically. Solid otherwise.

Moritz Jenz - 7

A solid display and was left gutted not to stop Modric after making an excellent block initially.

Greg Taylor - 7

An industrious shift on the left once more from the left-back. Did his best to set a high tempo when passed out to him from the back. Caught out for the third goal.

Callum McGregor - 8

He wanted the chance to play against the European kings and almost had a special Hoops moment, but it wasn't to be. Competed well with some of the best of this era to do it in midfield.

Reo Hatate - 8

A bundle of energy but some of Hatate's passing against arguably the best team in the world was sublime. Really cool under pressure.

Matt O'Riley - 7

Influence faded in the second half as the visitors took control but during the first half's bright spell, showed plenty of positive passes as is the norm.

Jota - 7

An utterly outrageous first half pass should have brought an assist as the Portuguese winger showed in spells what he can do at this level. Turned off at times defensively.

Liel Abada- 6

Probably the only player who looked a bit spooked by the size of opponent and ominous atmosphere. Missed a big chance and hooked at half-time.

Giorgos Giakoumakis- 7

A focal point in attack for Celtic and used his physicality well to unsettle the away defence that looked rattle early on, but recovered.

Daizen Maeda - 5

Made a few runs in behind and never stopped pressing but his ability to change the game was limited, missing a big chance early doors.

Kyogo Furuhashi - 4

Recovered from a shoulder blow in time to make this one.

David Turnbull - 4

Brought on to try and unlock a brilliant defence, without much success.

Aaron Mooy - 4

Brought on to try and compose the midfield but was left chasing shadows as Real took control.

Sead Haksabanovic - 4

Forced Courtois into a good save during his late cameo appearance.
