Celtic player ratings v RB Leipzig as Joe Hart error proves costly but Stephen Welsh sends message

Celtic lost out 3-1 in their latest Champions League Group F clash against RB Leipzig.

Christopher Nkunku put the home side ahead with a cute chip after the Frenchman had a goal ruled out by VAR, appearing to be a mere inches offside. Celtic passed up an abundance of chances against a team who kept one UCL clean sheet from the previous 15 ahead of this one but a huge blow was landed when captain and midfield enforcer. Callum McGregor was forced off with injury.

That didn't look to slow them down as Jota got them back on level terms, but goalkeeper Joe Hart made a terrible error, passing straight to an opposing player, Andre Silva punishing him with a goal. The Portuguese forward made a brace in the final quarter to leave the Hoops bottom on one point after three games, a huge game awaiting against the Germans at Parkhead next week. Here is how we rated the Celtic players on the night.

Joe Hart - 4

Couple of strong saves in the first half but his horror moment will ultimately define his night. Another error after a mix-up against Motherwell with Juranovic also gifted them a goal.

Josip Juranovic - 5

His right-hand-side was left open as Nkunku galloped forward to make it 1-0. Seemed a bit reluctant to play forward into Maeda down the channel.

Stephen Welsh - 6

A huge night for the academy product but did his best against a menacing forward line, showing bravery to get on the ball against a talented forward line.

Moritz Jenz - 5

Looked a bit shaky at times on his return to Germany and his passing at times from the back was a bit wayward. A learning curve for the developing centre-back.

Greg Taylor - 6

Looked good in spells but was quickly reminded of the task at hand against an international-quality right-hand side. Caught out for the third goal.

Callum McGregor - 5

A tough one for the Hoops captain. Didn't make up enough ground to put Nkunku off from scoring the opener and injured himself in the process. Will hope it isn't a bad one.

Reo Hatate - 7

Struggled with the pace of the game in the first half but a different man in the second. Returned to his usual, energetic self who pressed everything, and his brilliant pass set the wheels in motion for Jota's strike. The club quarterback.

Matt O'Riley - 6

Seemed to want an extra two seconds on the ball which you can't get away with at this level. Got more involved in the dirty side of the game after half-time and seemed to grow in confidence from this before being hooked.

Jota - 6

Didn't make much of an impact in the first half and could have helped out defensively. They splashed out big for goals in the elite environments though and that's exactly what he delivered at a key time, but proved in vain.

Kyogo Furuhashi - 7

Missed a few chances in the first half but was in the right place at the right time, before providing the key pass for Jota to apply a finishing touch.

Daizen Maeda - 6

Ran up and down the line all night and was starved of service by Juranovic, albeit he created a big chance for his side in the first half.

Oliver Obilgaard- 5

A baptism of fire for the Dane. Showed Nkunku in once too many and was fortunate not to see a goal conceded from it. Put in a few decent defensive blocks.

Sead Haksabanovic - 3

Brought on to try and grab a vital second goal at 2-1 but it was very quickly three and the game was done before he could start.

James Forrest - 3

The winger had a similar task to the Montenegrin international with much the same results.

Giorgos Giakoumakis - 3

Back from injury after his international duty problems. More about fitness than providing a miracle comeback.

James McCarthy - 3

Was reportedly one Celtic were open to let leave on deadline day but a lack of midfield options saw him thrust in here late on.
