Celtic player ratings v Motherwell as Hatate takes centre stage while two teammates struggle

Celtic just about got a 2-1 win in their latest Premiership match versus Motherwell as they responded to a defeat against St Mirren.

The Hoops were comfortable in the first half and were ahead inside 20 minutes when Matt O'Riley's header was turned into the net on the line by Kyogo Furuhashi. A bizarre own goal allowed Motherwell back into the game when Josip Juranovic and goalkeeper Joe Hart's communication broke down, the Croatian chesting by Celtic's helpless number one to level things up at half-time.

Steven Hammell's visitors posed little real threat but Parkhead manager Ange Postecoglou watched his side appear to deal with set-piece situations unconvincingly and 'Well missed a couple opportunities to test Hart. Reo Hatate made sure his side got a winner with a low drive into the bottom corner from outside the box as they return to the Premiership's summit, but Callum McGregor sacrificed himself by getting sent off as Ross Tierney broke through on goal. Here is how we rated the players in Celtic's latest league outing.

Joe Hart - 4

Should have commanded his box better when Juranovic awkwardly chested past him and was lucky not to be spotted in no man's land when McGregor was sent packing.

Looked unconvincing from cross balls at times too. Not his best day but the job got done.

Josip Juranovic - 5

Didn't seem to have the same vigor going forward, opting for sideways passing instead of forwards.

Then the own goal, a moment that probably won't happen again in his career. A bizarre moment from a usually reliable figure.

Stephen Welsh - 6

Motherwell didn't throw too much at him but did the basics well enough, albeit looked uncomfortable with crosses.

Moritz Jenz - 6

A satisfactory outing for the centre-back but had similar problems to Welsh when the ball was in the air.

Greg Taylor - 6

Looked a bit leggy after a week away with Scotland on top of illness. Still had time to make runs down the left but was beaten a couple of times on his flank.

Callum McGregor - 7

A proper captain's challenge at the end to deny Motherwell an outstanding chance to level late on. Dictated the midfield until then.

Reo Hatate - 8

A fantastic strike in the second half to win it but his performance went beyond that. Great range of passing and not afraid to put in a tackle.

Matt O'Riley - 6

A quieter shift from after initially helping open the scoring with a header. A couple of nice passes before fading out the game and hooked after the hour mark.

Jota - 6

Uncharacteristically quiet afternoon from the Portuguese defender. Got a run at Paul McGinn on a few occasions but his end product was lacking.

Kyogo Furuhashi - 7

Got his side's opener with a proper poacher's goal but then proceeded to miss chance after chance which could have altered the look of this match.

Daizen Maeda - 6

Recovered from a thigh problem on international duty to make this one. Made a few searching runs behind the defence but again, that clinical edge appeared to be missing from his game, despite good work off it.

David Turnbull - 4

Brought on to try and unlock his former side's defence but in the end, didn't have too much of an impact.

Liel Abada - 4

Another of Postecoglou's attacking weapons was brought on to spark life into this, but wasn't really able to get going.

Aaron Mooy - 2

Late sub to man the barricades.

Oliver Abildgaard - 2

A debut for the Danish midfielder, albeit in a few minutes of cameo due to McGregor's red.

Sead Haksabanovic - 3

Replaced Kyogo but role turned more defensive when the captain was marched off.
