Celtic player ratings as Reo Hatate struggles in engine room alongside teammates during Rangers Scottish Cup exit

It was a gut-wrenching Sunday afternoon for Celtic at Hampden.

A Carl Starfelt own goal deep into extra time meant Rangers had the last laugh as the Glasgow rivals went head to head in the Scottish Cup semi finals.

Celtic had won 17 games in a row at a Hampden until Starfelt deflected the ball past Joe Hart deep into extra time to see Gio van Bronckhorst's men break the trend and set up a final meeting with Hearts on May 21.

It brings to an end Ange Postecoglou's hopes of a domestic treble with focus as Celtic turn their attention back to regaining the Premiership title.

Record Sport looks at how the players rated during a disappointing day at the national stadium:

JOE HART : Excellent distribution with both hands and feet and let off the hook with first half Aribo header which was nodded into his hands before watching Lundstram's effort rebound off a post. Dominated his box but left grasping air when beaten by Arfield high into his left hand corner. Slight touch to take Tavernier shot onto a post in extra-time before being beaten by Starfelt touch at the death. 8

JOSIP JURANOVIC : Tasked with keeping a rein on Kent and coped well while becoming a key attacking weapon as he linked well down the right. Succumbed to a hamstring strain to be replaced by Ralston in 68th minute but another impressive showing by the Croatian. 7

CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS : Calmness personified as he shackled Roofe all afternoon. Reacted first to deny Ramsay a tap-in after Lundstram had rattled a post. Somehow failed to add a second for Celtic as he side footed against the crossbar from close-range. Ice cool and commanding from the Fridge. 8

CARL STARFELT : Survived several careless moments with stray passes out of defence but settled down to regain his composure and became a dominant figure in the air but always prone to a mistake. Dragged out of position on occasion by movement of Roofe but bailed out by his defensive sidekick before deflecting Bassey cross into his own net. 6

GREG TAYLOR : Superb cover to thwart Ramsey as he rescued his side by reading the danger in dangerous early moment. First scorer coupon buster as he found himself free in the right side of the box to lash a low shot home via a kind deflection off of Bassey. Replaced after normal time. 7

CALLUM MCGREGOR : Crucial challenge on Kent prevented a near certain opener for Rangers in the third minute. Fortunate to escape booking for early lunge on Aribo but trademark anchor role as he provided midfield security booked for trying to clip heels of Kent. The trigger for a host of Celtic attacks. 7

REO HATATE : Caught in possession to gift Rangers early chance and curled a chance wide of a post in wasteful 53rd minute opportunity from 18-yards. Too often second best in 50-50 challenges and dominated by Jack and Lundstram for long spells. Lack of authority in engine room. 5

TOM ROGIC : Struggled to get into the game as the frantic pace kept his influence to a minimum. Peripheral figure and hustled and bustled out of possession as he came in for some rough treatment from Bassey in particular. So often the architect of Celtic's big moments on the grand stage but not on this occasion. 5

JOTA : Guided a fifth minute back post header over the top in the fifth minute and guilty early on of going for glory with a couple of wild efforts rather than seeing the pass as Celtic threatened. Frustrated as he failed to bring a final product to the party but livelier late on as switched flank to the right but too often caught in two minds. 6

DAIZEN MAEDA : Dynamic classic centre forward display. Ambitious and unorthodox backheel flick fell wide in first half. Snapped and harried around the feet of Rangers defence and dropped into a left sided role after the arrival of Kyogo. Workhorse tired and made way for Forrest at start of extra-time. 6

LIEL ABADA : Looked set to once again give Barisic nightmares in opening moments with his pace down the right, kept his width but another who lacked a decent final ball when it mattered most. Dragged a shot off target and replaced by O'Riley in 57th minute as he limped off after being ineffective as an attacking threat. 5

Subs

MATT O'RILEY : On for Abada just after the break and energised a midfield which claimed some much needed control of the contest for the last half hour of normal time but it wasn't to last. 4

KYOGO FURUHASHI : Given rousing reception and a welcome return for Hoops after long absence through injury as he replaced Rogic. Added instant attacking impetus and invention but nodded a Jota cross wide of target. Couldn't get free of Bassey with extra-time chance. 4

ANTHONY RALSTON : Replaced Juranovic and failed to get close enough to Arfield at Rangers leveller. Struggled to get a grip of Kent as the Rangers winger sprung into life. Wisely switched to the left. 3

JAMES FORREST : Brought much needed attacking dimension when thrown into the action for extra-time. Few bright moments but struggled to get on the ball and stretch Rangers as game opened up. 3

DAVID TURNBULL : Last throw of Celtic's dice as midfielder arrived for final ten minutes of extra-time but too little, too late. 2

STEPHEN WELSH : On at the start of extra-time at right back and never looked comfortable as he failed to block Bassey cross at Rangers winner. 2

Subs not used: Bain, Jullien, McCarthy, Johnston, Ideguchi.
