Celtic Park and Ibrox facing Euro 2028 omission as Scotland set for one stadium in joint UK bid

Celtic Park and Rangers' Ibrox are both staring down the possibility of being excluded from the running of being a host stadium for Euro 2028.

The UK is launching a bid to host the prestigious European tournament alongside the Republic of Ireland but it is set to be dominated by English stadia, according to The Times. 'As few' as six stadiums down south may be used, with Liverpool's Anfield a surprise omission. Dublin's Aviva Stadium and Croke Park will take up another two slots, with MK Dons' Stadium MK a surprise inclusion.

That means Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will get just one each in their respective countries. Hampden Park - the home of the national team - is a likely contender although it is not stated explicitly that will be Scotland's hosting venue. In any case, it means Celtic Park, Ibrox, or both stadiums will not be hosting some of Europe's big international matches during that tournament if the bid is successful.

Turkey are the other country bidding to host the Euros in just under six years' time but they also are up against Italy in the 2032 bidding war.

A final bid dossier is due in to UEFA in April before it goes to a vote next September, with 'hopes' remaining that Turkey will focus on their 2032 bid.

Hampden hosted matches at Euro 2020 last year as a variety of venues across Europe were used, with the home of Celtic and Rangers again sidelined.
