Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley addresses transfer links amid Manchester United interest

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley has addressed the transfer speculation surrounding him amid interest from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs.

The 21-year-old London-born midfielder has impressed during his brief time with Celtic, after making the move to Glasgow just seven months ago. O'Riley has already registered three assists in five games during this season's league campaign in Scotland and it has been clear to see why United are keeping a close eye on the former MK Dons player.

The transfer window closes on Thursday as the September 1 deadline signals the end of what has been a frenetic and disjointed few months for the Reds. The late additions of Casemiro and Antony from Real Madrid and Ajax respectively will have relieved concerns from supporters that the squad was in dire need of reinforcement.

The MEN understands O'Riley is being scouted by United, and the player has responded to being linked with a move away from Celtic Park.

Asked if he is looking forward to the transfer window closing, he said: “I think everyone does. Everyone involved in football, transfer times are a really awkward time. The fans are really excited. For the players and staff and the club, it can be stressful.

“Especially for players who are maybe trying to get a move, they are itching and stuff like that. I’m in the position right now where it is quite chilled for me. I’m not really thinking about much. I love my football here, so that makes it quite easy for me."

O'Riley did concede that it's pleasing to hear his name linked with a club such as United, but stressed his full focus is on Celtic.

He added: “Yeah, it’s obviously nice. It shows I am doing good things, it shows I am playing in a team which is competing at a high level. But, like I said, I don’t think about any of that stuff at all. Right now, I’m enjoying my football here, I’m loving it.”
