Celtic 'join the race' to sign Brighton star Evan Ferguson

Celtic have reportedly joined the race to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Scottish Premiership champions are chasing a new striker having let Kyogo depart the club in a £10m deal with Rennes.

Ferguson - a Republic of Ireland international - has struggled for game time this season having been used sparingly since Fabian Hurzeler's summer arrival.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from the Amex Stadium this month but is currently on the sidelines with a knock.

The Daily Mail reports that Celtic have joined the likes of Everton, Fulham, Arsenal, Real Betis and West Ham in seeking a loan agreement with Brighton.

In a separate report, the Mail claims that the latter have emerged as the favourites to sign Ferguson this month.

However, Brendan Rodgers is in need for additional firepower in the striking department, with Kyogo's exit leaving Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny as the only recognised first-team strikers at Lennoxtown.

In a potential blow to Celtic though, Hurzeler has already said that a loan to a fellow Premier League club would be his preference. 

“This decision should be what is best for the player and for the club," the German said. "We went Buonanotte, for example, to Leicester.

"We know that the Premier League is a very good league to improve, because it’s tough, it’s intense, especially for young players. It’s the perfect environment to adapt.

“In the end, they want to play for Brighton and we want them to play for Brighton. So, when they improve in the environment of the league where we are also playing, it’s always very helpful.

"So, that’s why I am not thinking about making the other teams better, it’s more about what is best for the player.”
