Celtic in 'stonewall' penalty let off as Chris Sutton and fellow pundits deliver unanimous verdict on Raith Rovers claim

Pundits were in agreement that Raith Rovers should have had a penalty for handball in their Scottish Cup clash with Celtic.

And that includes Chris Sutton who agreed with Paul Hartley's assessment that it was a "stonewaller."

The Premiership frontrunners were leading through Liam Scales' wonderful strike when the ball appeared to strike Cameron Carter-Vickers' arm in the box during the first half.

The defender was under no apparent pressure from the Rovers front line but moved his arm towards the ball as he controlled it, leading to immediate claims for a penalty from the visitors.

Michael Stewart on commentary for Premier Sports remarked that it was a "clear penalty" at the time.

And half-time punditry duo Sutton and Hartley were in agreement as Sutton said: "I thought it was a penalty. The cross comes in and Ralston doesn't read the flight of the ball well.

"I think you can see Carter-Vickers his arm motions towards the ball and it hits his arm, it is a penalty kick.

"Raith Rovers can count themselves unfortunate not to get that.

"I don't know how he has missed it, you would have to ask the referee.

"Raith aren't going to get many opportunities, they have to be awarded that. I feel for Raith Rovers in that situation."

"There isn't even anyone around Carter-Vickers so I'm not sure how he doesn't see it.

"Raith will feel they should have had the chance to get back into the game."

Hartley added that it was a "stonewaller" with Sutton agreeing.

Meanwhile Craig Levein said on BBC Sportsound: "That's a penalty. That was going in, or at least it was close to going in.

"It's bounced up and hit his arm."

However whistler Steven McLean didn't give it and the Hoops went into half-time 1-0 up against the Championship side.
