A former Celtic favourite has been sacked from his role as Wigan Athletic manager.
The English Football League side have confirmed that Shaun Maloney has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
The decision follows a season of disappointing results, particularly at home, despite Maloney’s earlier efforts to guide the club through a turbulent period.
Appointed in January 2023, eight months after leaving Hibernian, Maloney inherited a team facing relegation from the EFL Championship.

While he couldn’t prevent the drop, the ex-Celtic midfielder remained in his role for the 2023/24 League One campaign.
Despite an overhaul of the squad and an eight-point deduction in the summer of 2023, Maloney led Wigan to a respectable mid-table finish.
Maloney’s time at Wigan also saw a number of proud moments, including a high-profile Emirates FA Cup third round tie with Manchester United in January 2024.

Since hanging up his boots due to injury in 2017, the 46-times capped Scotland international has also worked with Celtic and the Belgian national team as a coach.
