Celtic hero slams Kris Boyd claim over Alfredo Morelos and insists he doesn’t come near Jota

Frank McAvennie reckons Alfredo Morelos can’t touch Jota when it comes to flair and natural ability, insisting the Celtic winger is the best player in Scotland.

Former Hoops hero McAvennie was responding to Kris Boyd’s claim at the weekend that Morelos, and not Jota, was the best player in the country. During Sky Sports’ coverage of the Edinburgh derby on Sunday, Boyd rejected former Hibs midfielder Scott Allan’s claim that Jota is the best player, arguing that Rangers’ Colombian striker deserves that title.

But McAvennie thinks Boyd is wide of the mark, stressing the £6.5million signing from Benfica has already progressed to another level this season. “It’s all about opinions but Jota was outstanding in his first year at the club and clearly now wants to take it to another level,” said McAvennie. "The safe thing to say is he’ll be the most-fouled player this season and that’s the sign of someone who’s a game-changer.

"When he was good he was superb last time out but there were a few games where he didn’t quite show up. Even then though he still put in a shift and did the hard work.

“In this campaign I think that even in his bad games he’ll be a 7/10, which will make him extraordinary. Jota has the potential to play for anybody in any league.

“He’s so comfortable on the ball and I’m really looking forward to watching him every time he plays.” He added.

It’s that crowd-pleasing confidence and the skills he uses to conjure something out of nothing which makes the wideman more of an entertainer than Morelos, according to McAvennie He added: “Morelos is Rangers’ best player.

“He brings other people into the game and, most importantly, he scores goals but is he a better player than Jota? I don’t think so. Listen, Morelos works hard for his team but he can’t touch Jota when it comes to flair and natural ability and long may it continue for the boy.

“No one can shine in every single game but even when Jota’s form dips, his work rate doesn’t.”
