Before his spell in Manchester, Macari spent seven years with Celtic, scoring 56 goals for the club.
He won five Scottish top-flight titles and two Scottish Cups as a player before a short stint as manager in the 1993/94 season.
His Old Trafford appearance comes as Celtic's city rivals, Rangers, prepare to travel to face United on Thursday evening in the Europa League.
Brendan Rodgers' men are also in action in Europe this week, welcoming Swiss side Young Boys to Glasgow's east end in a mammoth Champions League clash on Wednesday.
