Celtic hero in 'back to basics' Rangers message as Giovanni van Bronckhorst bids to turn form around

Frank McAvennie has urged Rangers to get 'back to basics' and the ability in their team will shine through and take them past the difficult period they are facing.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is feeling the heat after the Light Blues got hammered 4-0 by Old Firm rivals Celtic in the first meeting between the pair this season. They followed up that result with an emphatic defeat by the same score over in Amsterdam against Ajax in their opening Champions League group stage game.

Things don't get any easier for the Ibrox men with Napoli set to arrive in Glasgow for match day two of their section. The Naples outfit are enjoying a fine run of form and sit top of Serie A unbeaten after six games while they also inflicted a heavy defeat on Liverpool in the other fixture in Group A last midweek.

But Celtic hero McAvennie believes Rangers have just got to get the basics right and start believing in themselves again. He knows they have a decent team at their disposal and can play at a very high level, they've just not really shown the heights of last season again so far this term.

Speaking to Football Insider, Macca said: “Rangers are going through a transition at the moment.

“I know that they demand to win every game, that’s pressure in itself. They’ve got a decent team but they’ve got to go back to basics. Get the basics right and then the rest will shine through, your ability will take you through.

“Stop trying to play the Hollywood passes and just play it five yards, ten yards and get the confidence back. That’s what they’ve got to do.

“Rangers got beaten 4-0 and we’re talking about them needing to get their confidence back whereas Celtic got beat 3-0 and their confidence was so high because of the way they played. It’s night and day.

“I think Rangers have just got to get back to basics. They’ve got to start believing in themselves again. That’s where the manager earns his money. They went all last year in the European run, we know how they can play they just haven’t really done it yet.“
