There will be party songs at Parkhead this weekend when Celtic are handed the Premiership trophy. But some fans can also hear alarm bells ringing due to the post-split slump.
Ange Postecoglou’s men haven’t won a game since getting over the title finishing line and some punters are already hovering close to the panic button with the Scottish Cup Final against Inverness coming up and the Champions League ahead next term. Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: “Celtic demolished by Hibs as big Ange's once Invincibles become minceables. Cally will go ballistic if Celtic are as atrocious as they were against Hibs. Has Ange took this team as far as he can?”
Fraser Davison, Glasgow, said: “In recent weeks Celtic have lacked ability to pass to each other, been powderpuff in the tackle and played tippy tappy stuff with no end product. It was a shambolic display and the Treble is seriously in doubt if they keep serving that garbage up.”
Bill Waugh, Glasgow, said: “It’s ok Ange saying we’re champions but start next season the way they’ve ended this one they are in big trouble. They’ve been bang average for weeks. They’ve given teams plenty of heart for next year.”
Gary Smith, Saltcoats, said: “Celtic’s recent results and play are worrying. They say bring on Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man City but I fear it when we even beat teams in our own league. Celtic need to bring in good defenders before the Champions League starts.”
Neil Renton, Edinburgh, said: “After their humiliating defeat to Hibs, it’s clear Celtic don’t have enough depth to their squad to make an impact in Europe. The only way they’ll be in Europe in January is if they help Kyogo flit house when he goes to a bigger team in the winter transfer window.
Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: “Apparently the Celtic team were hit with a cold outbreak before last night's game in Edinburgh. The only fit player they had was Scott Bain, who couldn't catch a cold.”
Not everyone’s knees are jerking though and Kevin Lord, Drylaw, said: “So, if Rangers win over Celtic is the signal for them winning the league next year, do we now assume Hibs will be the challenger and Celtic will be fighting relegation? They really do live in a different world.”
Michael Beale has started his big Rangers revamp with the likes of Allan McGregor, Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield and Filip Helander saying their goodbyes at Ibrox on Wednesday. But Henry McCoy emailed: “Rangers are wasting money on Connor Goldson as he's been out nearly all season. Now he's set to miss the European qualifiers. They should have got rid and kept Scott Arfield.”
There’s some contrast between the New Firm right now. Aberdeen are celebrating after overcoming their nightmare spell to storm to third spot in the table. But it’s terror at Tannadice with Dundee United heading back to the Championship.
William Masson, Aberdeenshire, said: “A lot of credit will go to Barry Robson and his coaching staff for turning the dons season around and rightly so. The players also deserve a lot of credit for showing the character to come back from two capital thumpings and Darvel.”
And United fan Kenny Goff, Dundee, is trying to be optimistic as he said: “United have been awful this season, but we cant change it now. Let’s get on with the job of getting us back up and back on track.”
