Celtic fans fly Palestinian flags in away end ahead of Hearts clash at Tynecastle

Celtic fans held up Palestinian flags in the Tynecastle away end ahead of their match with Hearts this afternoon.

The visiting section of the ground was packed out by Hoops supporters and the vast majority held up a Palestine flag.

It comes as players for both Hearts and Celtic wore black armbands during the match as a show of support to those affected by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

A joint statement from the SPFL and SWPL urged clubs to use black armbands this weekend with the league bodies supporting the British Red Cross' emergency appeal to support the international response efforts.

The joint statement read: "Given the terrible events of the past two weeks in Israel and Palestine, our thoughts are with all those who continue to suffer from this enduring conflict.

"Scottish football is a positive and cohesive force for good in the communities that surround and sustain our clubs.

"We will therefore be supporting the British Red Cross, who have launched an emergency appeal to support the international response efforts aiding those in urgent need and will be promoting this appeal through social media this weekend.

"We will be suggesting to our clubs that they use black armbands this weekend, as a show of humanitarian support for those affected by the conflict."

Earlier this week Celtic fan group the Green Brigade announced their intention to show support for Palestine with a flag display during the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

A Celtic statement had distanced the club from a previous display and condemned the display of "such messages" at Celtic Park.
