An on-air apology was issued by Viaplay during Celtic’s Scottish Cup fifth round tie after a banner was unfurled aiming abuse at Scottish Conservatives leader Douglas Ross.
Daizen Maeda had given Ange Postecoglou’s side an early lead against St Mirren as they look to book their place in the quarter-finals. The Japan international turned home from close range to open the scoring, but there was a delay as VAR checked for a possible offside. None was found, and the goal was given to the relief of the Parkhead faithful.
But they used the break to make their feelings on Ross, who was running the line on the opposite side, clear. The Green Brigade unveiled a banner that read: “VAR decision: Douglas Ross is a c***,” which was cheered by the majority of fans within the stadium. The Celtic fans have felt that their team has been subjected to more VAR checks than others this season, especially after goals.
TV cameras initially went to show the banner and were panning out to reveal it, before a word from those behind the scenes caused the operator to stop panning before cutting away. Commentator Rory Hamilton then apologised to any viewers who may have been offended.
