Celtic fan disappears in Lanzarote as worried family issue desperate appeal for help

A desperate search is underway by police in Lanzarote to find a missing Scots man who disappeared after a night out.

Gary Watson Shearer, from Paisley, headed to Lanzarote on March 16 for a week to celebrate St Patrick's Day. The 53-year-old checked into his hotel around 5pm and dumped his belongings in his room before heading out to a Celtic bar on the Puerto Del Carmen Strip.

He hasn't been since leaving Bar 67 at around 11.30pm over a week ago. Gary's family, from Renfrew, alerted travel company Jet2 on Tuesday, March 21, after becoming concerned they hadn't heard from him for several days.

He last posted a photo on Facebook sitting by the hotel pool at 5.12pm and messaged his mum Ann shortly after to let her know he'd arrived safely on March 16.

His sister Nikki admitted the heartbroken family were "fearing the worst" and are worried for Gary's health as he suffers from epilepsy and Type 2 diabetes.

Nikki told the Record: "Gary and my dad went on holiday to Lanzarote in December and absolutely loved it so he decided to go back again himself for St Patrick's Day.

"We were trying to get him on the phone on Friday but just thought he was out partying but over the weekend we still hadn't heard from him and we started to get worried.

"My dad phoned the hotel on Monday but they said they couldn't give any information. By Tuesday my mum decided to contact Jet2. They alerted the authorities who entered his room and found his passport, money and all his belongings. He hadn't even slept there.

"Jet2 waited to see if he would arrive for his flight back to Glasgow on March 23 at 3.10pm but confirmed he hadn't."

Gary was officially reported missing on Tuesday, March 21, and Spanish police have been making enquiries since. They've traced witnesses and those who were with him in Bar 67 on March 16.

He was last seen on the street outside the bar, but there have been no further leads.

His parents, Ann and Daniel, are now flying over to Lanzarote on Sunday morning where they will be met by police, while his three sisters stay in Scotland. Gary also has a 34-year-old son who lives in Poland.

"There's video footage of Gary in Bar 67 and he was sitting with six people who have all come forward," Nikki continued.

"Others have also said they saw him outside the bar. He sat outside for a wee while it seems after he left at 11.30pm. He was quite drunk. He walks with a distinctive limp and he was wearing a green and white Celtic FC top.

"The police are currently trying to get a location on his phone and see when it was last used.

"You think the worse, has he had a fit and fell? His he lying a ditch somewhere? Then you think he's without his medication. Just everything is running through your mind."

An Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Jet2 have been asked for comment.
