Celtic-daft boxer makes it a weekend to remember as he lines up title shot

Celtic daft Ben McGivern says it was a weekend to remember as he beat Latvian Kristaps Zulgis on Friday night before his heroes beat rivals Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox on Sunday.

The 34-year-old from Coatbridge says he woke up with a sore head on Monday for more than one reason, but was delighted with his win.

That paves the way for a Scottish title bid for the light-heavyweight star in July, and he says winning that would be like a world title triumph.

McGivern said: “I’m glad to get six rounds under my belt, it gets the fitness up and puts me in a position for the next one.

"Everything went as well as it possibly could have. I wanted a bit better from myself, because I know I can perform a lot better than I did, but everybody else says I did well.

"We got the rounds, we got the win, and we move on to the next one.

“I don’t know if I’m getting another fight before the Scottish title, but that’s the next big step for me at the Hilton in Glasgow on July 15.

“Just to get the opportunity to get a Scottish title is brilliant."

McGivern added: "I came into the fight game quite late, and to achieve a shot at a Scottish title... in my head it would be like a world title for me. It would mean a lot.

“To win it would be amazing, it would feel as if it’s the world title.

"I'm going to leave nothing in there, so when I do win it, that will be a big box ticked off.

"If that would be my last fight, for instance, I would be one happy man.”
