CELTIC are closing in on a deal to sign South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, with Ange Postecoglou saying he expects to wrap up his January transfer business ‘in the next few days’.
The Celtic manager wouldn’t be drawn specifically on the club’s interest in the 21-year-old forward, but reports in South Korea have suggested that Celtic have made a fourth offer of around £3m to Suwon Bluewings for his services, as well as offering him a tenfold wage rise on his current contract. His current boss, Lee Byung-keun, said: "I told Hyun-kyu that a bigger offer would come if I did well this season, but Celtic kept giving me better offers.
“He came to my room close to four times and talked to me... I couldn't break Hyeon-gyu's heart anymore."
Postecoglou says he is pleased with the club’s progress in the transfer market, but when asked what he felt Hyeon-gyu could bring to his team, Postecoglou said: "The same thing any hypothetical player can offer. I wouldn't bring him here unless I feel he can contribute.
“We’re progressing on all fronts. We’re obviously getting to the tail end of the window and we expect a conclusion either way to all our business in the next few days.”
Postecoglou has meanwhile ruled out a loan move for David Turnbull in this window, as he backed the midfielder to play a big part in his plans in the second half of the season.
Turnbull, who came off the bench to score from long range in the 4-0 thumping of St Mirren on Wednesday night, has found game time hard to come by this season, starting just seven matches. The last of those starts came back in November, but when asked if Turnbull could possibly benefit from a loan move, Postecoglou said: “No, Dave’s very much part of what we’re building here.
“He’s been a bit unlucky, he got an unfortunate red card which meant he had to miss a couple of games that he would definitely have played a part in.
“Dave’s an important part of our set-up here and I’m sure he’ll be involved in the second half of the year.”
