Celtic boss Rodgers breaks silence after Clement sacked by Rangers

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he was "disappointed" to see Philippe Clement lose his job at Rangers

The Belgian manager was dismissed on Sunday following a Scottish Premiership defeat to St Mirren.

Alex Rae, Stephen van der Heyden and Colin Stewart have followed Clement out the Ibrox exit door.

Celtic boss Rodgers was asked about Clement's departure in his press conference on Monday and stated it was "sad" to see a "very good manager" lose his job.

"Like it is for any manager, I am always disappointed when a manager loses his job," said Rodgers off Clement being relieved of his duties.

"Philippe being in there for the period of time that he has, disappointed for him as a coach.

"I think we all know the conditions up here, you have to be winning and show that consistency to win but always sad when a manager loses his job.

"Philippe has shown, previous to coming into Rangers that he is a very good manager. He has won titles, he is not just a good coach, he is a winning coach and has won.

"We know the conditions up here, there is relentless pressure on you to win at Celtic and Rangers, expectation is there and that doesn't stop on a daily basis so you have to then come out and be a consistent winner."

Asked if it is also a mark of the level of achievement at Celtic that pressure increased at Ibrox, Rodgers added: "I think it is also how we have dealt with the pressure. That has been key to it. We didn't get off to the best of starts last season when I came in, in terms of consistency level.

"I think when Philippe came in obviously they had that bounce and had a really good run but then once we started to find our feet and get our rhythm and then I think how we dealt with pressure, we dealt with it really well.

"From that moment on we have continued to grow and improve. It is a great credit to the players how they have coped with that and how they have performed."

On his interaction with Clement, Rodgers commented: "You don't really, no [have much interaction with rival manager]. That's the honest answer.

"You actually play enough times, you come up against each other a lot but in terms of the interaction, it isn't so much.

"But like I say, I've seen his work outside of Rangers as well and they need to look at that and his CV to know Rangers employed a very good manager and that is why they gave him the job."
