Celtic 'blocked Johnny Kenny exit' to St Mirren on deadline day

Celtic blocked a loan offer for striker Johnny Kenny on transfer deadline day.

St Mirren were hopeful of striking a deal to take the 21-year-old to Paisley for the rest of the season, according to The Scottish Sun.

Kenny spent the first half of the season in Ireland with Shamrock Rovers, with interest also coming from the League of Ireland side over a second spell.

However, it was St Mirren pushing for deal before last night's 11pm deadline.

Kenny would have been available to play for St Mirren - a third club this season - due to differing league schedules in Ireland and Scotland meaning a unique FIFA rule over playing for three separate clubs would come into play.

Stephen Robinson previously signed Kwon from Celtic in the January transfer window last year and wanted to repeat the trick with Kenny this term.

But, Celtic refused to let Kenny leave as he was kept as an active backup option behind Adam Idah after no new striker recruits checked in at Celtic Park.

Kenny has made one appearance for Celtic this season after returning from his loan in Ireland.

The striker climbed off the bench against Ross County on January 11th to set up a goal in the 4-1 win in Dingwall.

Since then, Kenny has been on the bench against Dundee and Motherwell but was not in the matchday squad for the Scottish Cup tie against Kilmarnock.

It is now expected Kenny will be called upon as a striking option under Brendan Rodgers with Idah the main number nine after Kyogo Furuhashi's transfer exit to Rennes.
