Celtic and Rangers 'targeted' for Super League involvement as UEFA nervous over looming court verdict

Celtic and Rangers may be included in new plans to revive the infamous Super League idea that failed in 2021.

The English Premier League clubs involved backed out of the controversial plans amid fan outrage but some on the continent are still pressing on behind the scenes. UEFA chiefs are 'getting increasingly nervous about the legal battle surrounding the European Super League.' according to the Mirror and 'new, revised version could yet include a proposal to Scottish Old Firm giants Celtic and Rangers because they would be seen as a huge draw for any future breakaway.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are still locked into a court case - which might come to a conclusion in December - as they are challenging UEFA’s control and monopoly on European football after the ESL was blocked initially.

The three superpowers - all but Real Madrid exiting the Champions League group stages this week - are keen to press on with their legal action as they are sick of UEFA having a big share of power, effectively ruling as governors of the game but also the main commercial partners as clubs take risks.

It's also thought across the continent that the Premier League has made itself too strong and their multi-billion TV deals mean La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga struggle to compete.

Any ESL participation is over for English clubs, but that will not stop clubs such as Ajax, Celtic and Rangers being touted as potential replacements because it will be about big crowds and popularity as well on top of audience and club size.
